International Design Thinking Expert Dr. Michael Lewrick

Introduction
KLA Schools recently had the honor of welcoming Dr. Michael Lewrick, an internationally recognized expert, best-selling author, and thought leader specializing in Design Thinking, Business Ecosystem Design, and Digital Transformation, for a masterclass held on February 28. The immersive professional development experience brought together leadership teams from KLA Schools of Plainfield, KLA Schools of Naperville, and KLA Schools of Naperville West, along with teachers and parents who joined the sessions to engage in meaningful discussions about innovation, creativity, and the future of education. The masterclass provided participants with an exploration of AI, human collaboration, and design thinking principles, and how these ideas can be applied to education and leadership in a rapidly changing world.

Hands-On Learning and Creative Exploration

The sessions were highly interactive, featuring activities designed to challenge participants to think creatively and collaboratively. Participants explored concepts such as growth mindset, out-of-the-box problem solving, adaptability, innovation, and the role of experimentation in learning. One insight shared during the session that resonated with many participants was, “Your brain is like a muscle — you have to use it or you lose it.” This message emphasized the importance of continuously exercising creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking in both education and everyday life. Through hands-on challenges and collaborative exercises, participants experienced how design thinking encourages individuals to experiment, learn from failure, and discover innovative solutions.

Design Thinking for Life

Dr. Lewrick introduced participants to the concept of Design Thinking for Life, a framework that applies design thinking principles to personal decision-making, leadership, and problem solving. Participants explored practical tools and approaches such as reframing problems to better understand root causes, brainstorming creative possibilities, rapid prototyping, and learning through iteration and feedback. A recurring theme throughout the workshop was the importance of maintaining curiosity and openness when approaching challenges. As Dr. Lewrick shared, “In a beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities; in the expert’s mind, there are few.” This perspective encouraged participants to challenge assumptions, explore new ideas, and approach challenges with creativity and flexibility.

Exploring AI and the Future of Learning

The masterclass also explored the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence in education and society. Participants discussed both the opportunities and challenges presented by AI, emphasizing that technology should support educators rather than replace them. AI tools can assist teachers by providing insights, supporting differentiated learning, and reducing administrative workload, while the human connection between teachers and students remains essential for mentorship, emotional development, and meaningful learning experiences. These discussions encouraged participants to think critically about how emerging technologies can be used responsibly while preserving the human values at the heart of education.

STEM Fair Participation

During his visit, Dr. Lewrick also participated in the STEM Fair hosted at KLA Schools, where he interacted with preschool students and families as they showcased creative experiments and hands-on science activities. The event highlighted the curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm of young learners and reflected KLA Schools’ commitment to encouraging experiential learning and early exploration in science and innovation.

A Transformative Professional Development Experience

For the leadership teams, teachers, and parents who attended, the masterclass provided a valuable opportunity to explore new perspectives on innovation, adaptability, and lifelong learning. KLA Schools extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Michael Lewrick for sharing his expertise and inspiring the community to continue exploring innovative approaches to education while building learning environments that nurture curiosity, creativity, and resilience in students.
